Companies are increasingly faced with the dilemma that, on the one hand, rapid progress in technical and business administrative areas has resulted in the increasing specialisation of staff and management. On the other hand, the cross-linking of technical, economic and social tasks is of such a resulting complexity that they can no longer be adequately performed by specialists alone. There is therefore a demand for personnel who understand how to combine technical and business administrative subjects and so are able either to deal with unresolved issues independently or to act as a link between the different experts. This is precisely the purpose of the training provided by the industrial engineering course.

This broad-based course opens up a wide spectrum of opportunities for employment that ranges from logistics to materials management/acquisition, manufacture /production, controlling/accounting and to marketing/sales and organisation/data processing. Industrial engineers have extremely good job prospects not only in their traditional field of employment - the manufacturing sector - but also increasingly in the fields of consultancy and insurance. Their broad education and analytical skills put industrial engineers in high demand. Acting as an interface between technology and economics, they provide the necessary communication within companies between various departments and in customer contact.

Programme structure
In the foundation course (1st to 3rd semester), the focus is on the acquisition of the fundamentals of mathematics, science and economics. A solid grounding in the fundamentals and the ability to extend one’s knowledge continually by independent study count more than a specialisation in specific areas of technology and business administration that often quickly become obsolete. In the main course of study (4th to 7th semester), technical and economic subjects are studied in greater depth. In the technical part of the course, the degree programme is linked to the degree programme in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology so that use can be made of the available expertise and the superbly equipped electrotechnology laboratories.

Programme contents and specialisation areas
The course of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Engineering offers students a broad education that provides both business administrative and technical and interdisciplinary skills and qualifications. The aim of the course is to train graduates who have an overall perspective of complex interrelationships and who can be employed in a variety of areas due to their interdisciplinary education. Students can choose from the following specialisation areas:

  • Production Technology
  • Logistics
  • Information and Automation Technology
  • Drive Technology and Robotics
  • Microsystems Technology
  • Construction and Development

The teaching of key skills such as foreign languages, problem solving and the ability to work in a team and also mastery of modern electronic data processing tools complement the teaching of practical knowledge in engineering and economic subjects.

Practical training
Students have the opportunity to acquire their first professional experience in the work placement semester. This is often the time at which firm relations with companies are established, which can then be extended further during preparation of the final paper at the end of the course. There is a particular focus on the teaching of foreign languages. Building on the language skills acquired at schools previously attended, students learn, for example, how a conference is prepared and led in the Anglo-Saxon world of business, how a US patent document is assessed, and what must be observed in dealing with business partners in other cultural contexts. This gives students the opportunity to gain experience of working abroad during the course of study in the form of study and practical semesters and their final papers.
